Brazil vs. Spain Confederations Cup Final 2013 Preview: Why Brazil Will Win

Brazil will look to win its third straight Confederations Cup when it takes on Spain on Sunday. Even though Spain is the defending World Cup champion and one of the greatest squads ever compiled, there are many reasons why the Seleçao can be confident in its chances.

While Spain and Italy attacked one another up and down the field for 120 minutes, Brazil was home resting and watching the game. Spain may have gotten out alive from its game against Italy, but La Roja will have 24 hour less rest than its opponents. The match against Italy also pushed the Spaniards to their limits as they were constantly under attack and, if not for a few Italian mistakes, they would have easily lost.

If the rest is not a big enough factor, one must consider the weather and climate. Brazil is used to playing in the heat while the Spanish have already complained about it. After their match against Nigeria, the Europeans repeatedly noted that the climate slowed them down. Midfielder Cesc Fabregas was even taken off the field due to fatigue and was unable to play against Italy.

Neymar

Regardless of the outcome on Sunday, Neymar is in line to obtain the player of the tournament award. The 21-year old has scored three goals and set up two other ones; he has been the star that the Samba Kings have been hoping for. With a chance to further elevate his profile, the future Barcelona star will likely play the best game of his young career and help vault his nation past Spain.

Attacking Style

Nigeria gave Spain trouble in the early going the group match between the two clubs. Why? Because the African side used its speed to pressure Spain and force its players into mistakes. The Nigerians even created a plethora of opportunities with this tactic and if not for better technique, they would have scored a few against the European champions. The Brazilians play a similar attacking style but they also have superior players than their African counterparts. Look for Luis Felipe Scolari to implement similar tactics to take down the Spanish empire.

Home Field Advantage

Brazil has not lost a competitive match at home since 1975. Moreover, the Samba Kings have upped their game tremendously in front of their fans after mediocre displays in prior 2013 matches. The crowd will surely be on their side and should provide a massive boost to the host nation.

Brazil 2-1 Uruguay: Late Paulinho header books Confeds Cup final berth

Paulinho popped up with a late winner as Brazil progressed to the Confederations Cup final with a hard-earned 2-1 victory over a gritty Uruguay side on Wednesday night.

An underwhelming game had appeared to be heading for extra time, with Edinson Cavani having cancelled out Fred's opener for the home side.

However, Paulinho nodded home a Neymar corner with just four minutes of normal time remaining to send the Belo Horizonte crowd into ecstasy, and leave Uruguay heartbroken.

Brazil looked weighed down by the almost tangible sense of expectancy among a partisan crowd packed into the Estadio Mineirao. However, even the significant pressure the hosts were under could not explain precisely why Selecao center half David Luiz took leave of his senses and elected to flagrantly haul Diego Lugano to the floor as the pair jostled for position at a corner 14 minutes in.

Luiz's stupidity really should have resulted in Uruguay taking the lead, but Forlan squandered the opportunity to score against the country in which he plies his trade, the Internacional attacker seeing his low spot kick turned around the post by Julio Cesar.

That fine stop drew a thunderous roar from the crowd but, in truth, they were given little else to cheer about during a desperately fractious opening quarter in Belo Horizonte.

Hulk worked himself into a fantastic position just before the half-hour mark, after a neat one-two with Neymar, but the Zenit forward inevitably ballooned the ball over the bar in attempting the kind of finesse of which he is simply not capable.

Brazil's mounting frustration then threatened to get the better of the team, with Luiz Gustavo picking up a deserved booking for a following through on Cristian Rodriguez, but they made a crucial breakthrough just before the interval.

Paulinho picked out Neymar's clever run in behind the Uruguay defense with a measured chip into the area and the Brazil No.10 controlled the ball on his chest before flicking it goalwards. Fernando Muslera saved well with his outstretched left arm but Fred was on hand to fortuitously slice home the rebound with the aid of his shin. It was a fittingly scrappy opener, given what had gone before.

Uruguay replied in somewhat similar circumstances just three minutes into the second half, with Thiago Silva - of all players - inexplicably passing the ball straight to Cavani, after a game of pinball in the Brazilian box. The in-demand Napoli striker took a quick touch before beating Julio Cesar with a low strike to the far left corner.

Uruguay very nearly went ahead midway through the second half with a Luis Suarez header that was deflected just over, before Fred flashed a spectacular - but wayward - volley that never looked likely to trouble Muslera.

With both sides horribly devoid of ideas, extra time appeared inevitable, but man of the match Paulinho rose at the back post to meet Neymar's deep corner and beat Muslera with a fine downward header to put the home side into Sunday's tournament decider.

Spain and Italy, Brazil and Uruguay: Confederations Cup Semifinals

The Confederations Cup semifinals are set. On Wednesday, Brazil takes on Uruguay in the first semifinal, a rematch of the 1950 World Cup final. On Thursday, Italy meets Spain in the second semifinal, a rematch of the 2012 European Championships. The final group stage matches were a bit anticlimactic, as all four semifinalists had already secured advancement. Well, technically, Uruguay's place was up for grabs, but a final match against Tahiti did not figure to provide any surprises.

Brazil versus Uruguay promises to be a passionate affair, as all of Brazil's matches have generated festive atmospheres. All of Brazil's matches have also been marred by protests, and Belo Horizonte will likely have tear gas in the air by the time the match kicks off. Thankfully, the on-field play has not suffered due to the off-field incidents occurring for the duration of the tournament.

On the pitch, Brazil enters the match riding high on Neymar's special skills and fabulous flair. The newest Barcelona signing has three goals in three matches entering Wednesday's semifinal. Neymar was the headlining act entering the 2013 Confederations Cup, and he has performed better than anyone anticipated. For all those who wondered what the fuss was about, Neymar delivered three gorgeous goals to warm up for Wednesday's semifinal. Now, only Uruguay stands in the way of a final at the famed Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

After a harsh loss to Spain in the tournament opener, Uruguay manager Oscar Tabaraz attacked Nigeria with all three of Uruguay's famed forwards playing in concert. Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez, and Edinson Cavani were all polished international stars, but the trio was split into separate duos when the national team called. Forlan, the man on the bench for the tournament opener, scored the match winner against Nigeria, and the buildup involved Suarez finding Cavani and Cavani finding Forlan. With all three forwards out of the starting lineup against Tahiti, Uruguay should have a fresh set of goal scorers ready to go against Brazil.

Attempting to slow down Uruguay's attacking triumvirate, Brazil's defense underwent a minor makeover last time out. Against Italy, Chelsea's David Luiz came off due to a thigh injury, and Bayern Munich central defender Dante stepped in to jostle against the powerful figure of Mario Balotelli. Dante held Balotelli scoreless and also went on to score his first goal for the selecao in Brazil's 4-2 victory over the Azzurri.

In Europe, Dante was pivotal to Bayern's treble during the 2012-13 season. His positional awareness exceeds Luiz's, and Dante is also an exceptional dribbler and aerial combatant. If he does take over for Luiz for the remainder of the tournament, Dante's afro should instantly become a recognizable symbol at the heart of the Brazilian defense.

In other injury news, the softly sung star of Brazil's opening match, Paulinho, sat out Brazil's match against Italy with an ankle knock. Paulinho was essential to Brazil's first two wins in the competition, but if he is unable to play, Hernanes would provide Brazil with an offensive-minded replacement. Obviously, the Lazio man is not nearly as strong in his tackles as Paulinho. With Cavani, Forlan, and Suarez foaming at the mouth, Brazil would prefer to have Paulinho join Luiz Gustavo in breaking up play in the middle of the park.

In the other semifinal, Spain takes on Italy in a rematch of the Euro 2012 final. Italy booked its entry into the Confederations Cup via that 4-0 loss to Spain last summer. Truthfully, that score line was a bit generous to the Spaniards. Jordi Alba's individual pace gave Spain a 2-0 lead moments before halftime. With Italy trailing 2-0, Cesare Prandelli employed all three of his substitutions before the hour mark. Unfortunately, Thiago Motta was one of them, and less than five minutes after coming on, he was stretched off with a hamstring issue. Italy played a man down against Spain for the final half hour of the final.

Italy conceded two late goals to Spanish substitutes, but the match was not as one-sided as the score line indicated. Italy actually managed more possession than Spain in the first half, when both teams were even on numbers. Before Motta was stretchered off, Italy was competitive.

Balotelli secured the spotlight on the pitch last summer, and he has done the same this summer. In Brazil, Balotelli scored important goals in Italy's two group stage victories, and his assist against Brazil was sumptuous. Unfortunately, Italy's No. 9 is an injury concern with a muscle problem in his left leg, and he is not the only hobbled Italian.

Midfield maestro Andrea Pirlo was rested against Brazil due to a calf injury. Italy needs the Juventus playmaker to orchestrate the midfield and neutralize Spain's possession tactics. Also, Daniele De Rossi was suspended against Brazil, so having both Italians back managing the middle of the park is vital to Italy's success.
Riccardo Montolivo, who was recently named captain of AC Milan, is feared to have suffered a concussion. With Milan teammate Ignazio Abate already lost to a dislocated shoulder, the Italians have a thin squad at the moment.

For Spain, a sloppy performance against Nigeria--by Spanish standard--still resulted in a 3-0 victory for the world champs. Spain's quality was undeniable. Barring muscle injuries to Cesc Fabregas and Roberto Soldado, Spain should field the same starting eleven that started the tournament. Fernando Torres may assume Soldado's place in attack, but Soldado's movement was praiseworthy against Nigeria, even if his finishing was lacking. David Silva would likely take over should Fabregas be unavailable.

The Confederations Cup has been an entertaining delight to this point, and with Spain, Brazil, Italy, and Uruguay reaching the final four, this tournament should not relent on the fireworks and excitement.

Brazil vs Uruguay: PREVIEW (26 June)

Probable Lineups
Brazil

  • Brazil secured top spot in Group A following the 4-2 win over Italy and will come up against South American rivals Uruguay for a repeat of the 1950 World Cup final.
  • Paulinho, who is supposedly set for a move to Tottenham Hotspur, will be expected to start after missing the victory on Saturday evening through injury.
  • David Luiz is also a doubt after hobbling off in the with over the Azzurri and may not be risked, with Dante set to deputise for the hosts after coming off the bench to net the opener.

Uruguay

  • Uruguay's impressive dismantling of Tahiti ensured their place in the semi finals, with the 8-0 win over the French Polynesian side enough to finish second in Group B.
  • Óscar Tabárez will be expected to ring the changes once again, especially on the frontline where Edinson Cavani and Luis Suárez, the latter netting twice from the substitute bench, look set to be recalled to the starting XI.
  • Abel Hernández may start the encounter following his four goal haul against Tahiti, meaning Diego Forlán will be forced to settle for a place on the bench.
  • Andrés Scotti is suspended following his red card on Sunday evening.

Prediction

  • A repeat of the 1950 World Cup final and Brazil will be determined to ensure the same scoreline isn't replicated at the Estadio Mineirão when the two teams meet on Wednesday evening.
  • Brazil head coach Luis Felipe Scolari will be expected to make two changes from the side that overcame Italy, with Paulinho and Dante coming in for Hernanes and David Luiz.
  • Neymar was substituted with 20 minutes remaining in the victory over the Azzurri and will be set to retain his starting place, hopeful of netting his fourth goal in four Confederations Cup games.
  • Uruguay will be looking to spring an upset over their South American rivals as they aim to replicate their feat from 1950.
  • Abel Hernández may start from the off in the encounter following his impressive display against Tahiti as Óscar Tabárez looks set to revert back to 4-3-3 for the meeting with the hosts.
  • Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani are ready to come back into the starting XI after the latter sat out the 8-0 win on Sunday evening and will look to improve his poor international goalscoring record of just 14 goals in 52 appearances.
  • While Uruguay will be aiming to navigate their way past the semi finals, home advantage and the strength of Brazil's attack line will see the hosts through to the final.

We must focus on Italy first, warns Pique

Spain star Gerard Pique has warned his teammates to focus on their Confederations Cup semifinal against Italy, and not on who they could face in the final.

La Roja finished with maximum points from the group stage after their 3-0 win over Nigeria on Sunday, and many have predicted a final showdown against Brazil, which takes on Uruguay in the last four on Wednesday after also winning all three of its opening games.

But Pique insists his side must only concentrate on overcoming Cesare Prandelli's side in its next game, claiming that premature thoughts of the final could see a replica of the team's 2009 semifinal defeat to USA.

"Let's not talk about a potential final, it happened to us at the last Confederations Cup in 2009 and we lost to the United States in the semifinals," the 26-year-old told reporters.  "Let's talk about the game that comes next against Italy.

"They won the first two games and lost to Brazil but they played hard at all times."

The center back also spoke about the effect the high temperatures at the Estadio Castelao had had on he and his teammates, after Vicente del Bosque admitted his side suffered in the conditions in Fortaleza.

"The pitch was in good condition and that helped us, but it's true that the heat was more intense," said the Barcelona man. "It's been a good day for us to get used to it."

The tournament has been marred by anti-government protests outside stadiums in Brazil, with fatalities already confirmed following violent clashes between police and civilians in the past week.

Pique, however, claims his side has largely been shielded from the problems off the pitch.

"We're not too aware of it [the protests], we're always in the hotel and being shuttled around," he added.

"When we're in the bus we see them sometimes protesting and saying what they think. We hope that our football is something they enjoy regardless."

PREVIEWS: Japan vs Mexico (22 June)

Probable Lineups

Team News

Japan
  • Japan were unfortunate to have exited the competition following their 4-3 defeat to Italy after Sebastian Giovinco struck late on to hand the Azzurri all three points.
  • Head coach Alberto Zaccheroni may look to play Mike Havenaar and Hiroshi Kiyotake from the off, the latter of whom was an unused substitute in the loss to Italy, but looks set to name a similar starting XI for the final game of their campaign other than the two changes.
Mexico
  • The 2-0 defeat to Brazil saw Mexico's Confederations Cup campaign come to an abrupt end, with only pride to play for in their final Group A game of the competition.
  • Head coach José Manuel de la Torre may look to keep any changes to a minimum, with Carlos Salcido set to return to left back and Jesus Zavala coming back into midfield.

Prediction

  • The defeat to Italy would've been tough for Japan to stomach having dominated the encounter for large spells of the game, only to fall to a late Sebastian Giovinco winner for Italy.
  • Having now exited the Confederations Cup, Alberto Zaccheroni may opt to field his third different striker for their final game of the tournament, with Mike Havenaar set to come in to replace Ryoichi Maeda.
  • Mexico are in the same position as Japan having fallen to defeat to Brazil and will be looking to depart the country with a win following the loss to the tournament hosts.
  • Like their Group A rivals, they'll look to end their time in South America with a victory and with it pick up maximum points against Japan.
  • However, Japan's attack is one to be particularly weary about and with the two defence's prone to making errors, expect this to be a high scoring encounter, with Zaccheroni's side picking up a narrow win.

Confederations Cup: Brazil v Mexico preview & predictions

Mexico take on the might of Brazil in the Confederations Cup with hosts looking to secure a FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final spot after an impressive win against Japan. This article contains a complete Brazil v Mexico preview, betting tips, odds, probable lineups, predictions, free bets and bookie promotions.

BRAZIL v MEXICO: MATCH PREVIEW
The Brazilians opened with a fairly convincing 3-0 win over Japan to kick the tournament off with. That is back to back wins now for Brazil, after beating France 3-0 in a pre-tournament friendly as well.

Atletico Miniero striker Jo, who scored as a second-half substitute against Japan, could start, with Fred the most likely to miss out – though Lucas Moura may find it harder to displace Hulk and Oscar in midfield.

Mexico lost their opening match 2-1 against Italy and this means they need to take something from the tournament favourites on Wednesday evening.

José Manuel de la Torre isexpected to name an unchanged side for the meeting with the hosts, resuming his selection of a lone striker being supported by a 4-2-3-1 formation. That puts Chicharito through a lot of lonesome and tiring work, especially if Giovani Dos Santos is unable to get in the game.

Mexico ran out 2-1 winners at Wembley against the Selecao during last summer's London Games. The Mexicans have a good recent record against Brazil with seven wins in their last 12 fixtures. This will be the fourth match in the Confederations Cup between them, and Mexico have won two of the three surprisingly. They also won the most recent meeting, that friendly last summer in Arlington, Texas.

BRAZIL v MEXICO: PROBABLE LINEUPS
Brazil (4-2-3-1): Cesar – Alves, Silva, Luiz, Marcelo – Paulinho, Gustavo – Hulk, Oscar, Neymar – Fred.
Mexico (4-2-3-1): Corona – Flores, Rodriguez, Moreno, Salcido – Zavala, Torrado – Aquino, dos Santos, Guardado – Hernandez.

Italy v Spain Preview: U21 European Championship Final (June 18)

After Italy and Spain have played the EURO 2012 senior final last year, the two nations will face each other also in the final of the European Under-21 Championship in Israel on Tuesday evening. Spain - unbeaten in 25 competitive matches - go into the final seeking to emulate the senior team's feat of back-to-back European titles. ITALY U21 v SPAIN U21: MATCH PREVIEW
As we predicted here, Italy won Group A (@ 2.25), Spain won Group B (@ 2.25), and both teams arrived to the final (@ 10.00).

Italy won a close fought Semi Final against the Netherlands. The Dutch were actually the dominating team in this semi-final, hit the post and missed several chances, but then it was striker Fabio Borini (Liverpool) who scored the 1:0 winner for the 'Azzurrini' eleven minutes before the end. Italy had beaten England 1:0 in the first game of the tournament, also defeated host Israel 4:0 and drew with Norway 1:1 in the last group match.

Lorenzo Insigne has recovered fully from the ankle injury that forced him off against Israel on matchday two. The SSC Napoli midfielder played 85 minutes of the semi-final win against the Netherlands. Gabbiadini could replace Immobile as central forward, while Saponara are fighting for a spot among the offensive midfielders.

Spain ran over Norway and won fully deserved 3-0. The only point of criticism was their conversion of chances, as they had missed several great opportunities in the first half. They beat Russia 1-0 in their opening match of the tournament before going on to beat a well fancied German side by the same scoreline thanks to a Morata winner. Morata continued his record of scoring in every game of the tournament with the opener against Holland on the way to a 3-0 victory.

Meanwhile for Spain, their single alteration is likely to see Alvaro Morata, the competition's top scorer with four strikes to his name in Israel, return to the XI at the expense of the goal-shy Rodrigo. With no fresh injury worries to report, Spain will be at full strength for the final.

Italy have conceded just one goal in the whole tournament while Spain haven’t conceded any. Italy They scored in every game at Euro 2013, with six different players getting their name on the scoresheet.

ITALY U21 v SPAIN U21: PROBABLE LINEUPS
Italy (4-2-3-1): Bardi; Donati, Bianchetti, Caldirola, Regini; Verratti, Florenzi; Saponara, Insigne, Borini; Gabbiadini

Mexico vs Italy Match preview

Italy will debut in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup with a match against CONCACAF champions Mexico on June 16. While El Tri are under pressure following two goalless draws in the World Cup qualifiers, their opponents will also have something to prove after sharing spoils with minnows Haiti in final warm-up game. MEXICO v ITALY: MATCH PREVIEW

Mexico’s World Cup qualification campaign isn’t going quite as swimmingly, with recent draws against Panama and Costa Rica leaving Jose Manuel de la Torre’s men with just eight points from six games and on the precipice of automatic qualification. In their nine matches in 2013, Mexico have scored just six goals, so El Tri aren’t bang on top of their form.

When de la Torre’s men do manage to find the back of the net, it usually comes courtesy of Javier Hernandez, who has scored four of their last five goals.

The nucleus of the squad that won Olympic gold in London last year will be involved for Mexico here, but for one key ingredient. Oribe Peralta, who scored four goals in six games last summer, misses out with a thigh injury. With no fresh injury worries to report, under-pressure boss Juan Manuel de la Torre is likely to field the same side that started the Costa Rica game. Anyway, Giovani dos Santos is pushing for a starting berth.

The Italians are top of their World Cup qualification group, comfortably so over Bulgaria. But they failed to press home advantage when they could only manage a draw against the Czech Republic. Following up that, the Italians were held to a 2-2 draw in Brazil, by a plucky Haiti.

Mario Balotelli is likely to miss out after picking up a thigh injury. The good news is that Stephan El Shaarawy has resumed full training after he didn't train on Thursday as a result of a muscle strain. Prandelli is likely choose Emanuele Giaccherini in order to complete the attacking triumvirate alongside El Shaarawy and Alessandro Diamanti.

MEXICO v ITALY: PROBABLE LINEUPS

Mexico (4-4-2): Corona – Flores, Rodriguez, Moreno, Salcido – Barrera, Zavala, Herrera, Guardado – De Nigris, Hernandez.
Italy (4-3-1-2): Buffon – Abate, Barzagli, Bonucci, Chiellini – De Rossi, Pirlo, Marchisio - Giaccherini, Diamanti, El Shaarawy.

Brazil v France preview (International friendly | June 9)

Brazil continue their preparations for the upcoming Confederations Cup with a warm up match against France this Sunday at Arena do Grêmio. Read on for our full Brazil v France betting preview with the latest team news, best odds, probable lineups, no deposit bonuses and free predictions.

BRAZIL v FRANCE: MATCH PREVIEW

Luiz Felipe Scolari has only won one of his six games since taking charge of the national team for the second time. While the Selecao have scored two goals a game under their new boss, a lack of defensive rigour has seen them keep just one clean sheet in those six games, shipping nine goals in that period.

In their most recent outing, they drew 2-2 at the Maracana against England and could have lost if it wasn’t for Paulinho’s 83rd-minute equalizer.

Leandro Damiao has picked up a thigh problem in training and he is set to miss out with replacement Jo looking to win his first senior cap since 2008. After impressing in the second period of the England friendly, Hernanes and Marcelo are pushing for starting places.

France’s recent record is not too strong either, they have lost three of their last five matches and fell to defeat in each of their last two. But Didier Deschamps is doing a very good rebuilding job of his own. Les Bleus are locked in the battle with Spain for the first place in their 2014 World Cup qualifying group, although home defeat to La Furia Roja is likely to cost them the automatic berth.

Despite dominating during their recent encounter with Uruguay, France's 1-0 loss was perhaps undeserving as Luis Suarez's second half strike was enough to separate the two teams.

Oliver Giroud is expected to continue upfront for Didier Deschamps’ men although Karim Benzema could make a return from recent injury troubles. Deschamps should recall his big guns for the Brazil game, with Yohan Cabaye, Adil Rami and Hugo Lloris all likely to start.

In their last seven meetings against the French, Brazil have only won once, with their European opponents winning four, including the FIFA World Cup final in 1998 and a World Cup quarter-final in 2006. With another win, France will record their country’s fifth win in the last six encounters against Brazil.

BRAZIL v FRANCE: PROBABLE LINEUPS

Brazil (4-2-3-1): Cesar – Alves, Silva, Luiz, Marcelo – Hernanes, Paulinho – Hulk, Oscar, Neymar – Fred.

France (4-2-3-1): Lloris – Debuchy, Koscielny, Rami, Mathieu – Cabaye, Matuidi – Payet, Valbuena, Gourcuff – Giroud.

Uruguay v France preview, predictions, odds free bets (International Friendly - June 6,2013)

France travel to Montevideo to face Uruguay in a most anticipated international friendly. The French side is looking to bounce back after defeat to Spain in their qualifying match in their campaign for the World Cup in 2014 while Uruguay is warming up for the Confederations Cup. Find here our complete Uruguay v France betting preview, tips, odds, probable lineups, free bets and betting predictions.

URUGUAY v FRANCE: BETTING PREVIEW

Uruguay are currently going through a terrible run of form. Oscar Tabarez’s men have only won once in their last nine matches, losing 2-0 to Chile in their last World Cup qualification match. in the past 18 months they have played 15 times, winning only three of those matches, drawing six and losing six. In their recent friendlies they shared spoils with Russia and France away before beating Poland, although they did lose their last friendly match to Spain.

Luis Suarez and Egidio Arevalo Rios are suspended for the upcoming Venezuela clash, but they are expected to feature this match against France.  Nicolás Lodeiro could also come into midfield having netted a brace during Botafogo's 2-1 win over Cruzeiro at the weekend. Having scored just twice in three games this year, the pressure will be on the likely attacking trio of Gastón Ramírez, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez to find a way past the France defence.

France come into this match with four wins in their last eight matches. Deschamps men sit in second place in their World Cup qualifying group, trailing leaders Spain by one point. Les Bleus have won their last five away friendly matches, including victories against Italy, Germany and England.

France don’t have any competitive games to play this summer. They will play Brazil in a friendly next weekend before taking their vacations. Hence, Didier Deschamps has selected a young squad with only one member over the age of 30 and the average age just 25 and four players who could earn their first cap however the experience of Benzema, Sagna and Hugo Lloris will still be on the tour.

With an inexperienced squad named, it's evident that France head coach Didier Deschamps is keen for a number of potential stars to garner international experience. Alexandre Lacazette, Clement Grenier, Eliaquim Mangala and Joshua Guilavogui are all set to earn their first caps (but only Mangala will play in the starting XI) with Yoann Gourcuff also returning into international fold after a lengthy absence.

These two teams played each other in a similar friendly game last year, and it ended in a boring 0-0 draw. Actually, the last four meetings between the two teams have ended goalless, so expect a low scoring affair.

Japan 1st team to qualify for 2014 World Cup

SAITAMA, Japan (AP) -- Japan became the first team to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, tying Australia 1-1 Tuesday night on Keisuke Honda's penalty kick in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

Tommy Oar put Australia ahead in the 82nd minute. But Matthew McKay's hand ball set up the penalty kick for Honda, who beat goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer with a left-footed shot to the top corner.

One year and eight days before the tournament opener in Sao Paulo, Japan qualified for its fifth straight World Cup and joined host Brazil in the 32-nation field.

Japan (4-1-2) has 14 points and leads Group B in the final round of Asian qualifying. Australia (1-1-4) is second with seven points and is ahead of Jordan (2-3-1) on goal difference. Oman (1-2-3) has six points, one ahead of Iraq (1-2-2) going into their game in Muscat later Tuesday.

The top two teams in each group qualify, and the third-place teams advance to a playoff.

Both teams had great scoring chances in the first half, but Schwarzer got his right hand up to block Shinji Kagawa's shot from close range. Brett Holman fed a through ball to Robbie Kruse, who fired a right-footed shot that Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima knocked down with an outstretched arm.
